Mike and Kathy Lozano go to the  Barak Obama Inauguration January 20, 2009
It was great to experience an event that makes history.  This was such an event and I knew I had to see it up close and live.  I felt the significance of just being there.  It gave me great pride in our country's ability to recognize the will of its people. As Abraham Lincoln said, great governments have to be "of the people, by the people, and for the people".  It was very exciting to just be there for this grand occasion. I have to say that God was watching over us once again.  We didn't know how we would be able to do this but things just started to fall in place.  I happened to hear about a second cousin that I never met (Nicole Lozano Barnard) who lived near Washington D.C.  I called her up and the next thing I knew we were invited to stay at her house.  She happened to work for the Federal Government and was able to help us figure out how to get around to the various inaugural events. Her mother Yvonne Zarate took and picked us up each day so we never felt without support for parking or transportation.  We joined two million other people.  We were so proud to be Americans.  We saw thousands of people wearing every type of Barak Obama merchandise imaginable and waving American flags. Some people went out of their way to be friendly.   We were there at 3:30 a.m. for the inaugural parade, and still thousands of people were already waiting.  The Secret Service tried to clear the streets at 4:30 a.m. so people who had waited all night on the streets had to move outside checkpoints.  By this time with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees we all felt like popsicles.  I sat on a piece of cardboard to try to stay warm.  It helped a little, but Kathy got so cold that she went off looking for a place to get some coffee and get out of the cold.  I stayed and tried to hold our place in line.  I was sorry to see some families who had stayed so many hours finally give up and walk away disappointed.  We felt like them also but we stuck it out.  After twelve hours of waiting we finally got to see the President and his wife walking down Pennsylvania Avenue.  He looked very presidential.  He wore a black overcoat over his suit, red tie and black scarf.  Michelle Obama wore a lemon grass color dress designed by a Cuban American designer.  She looked very beautiful. Everywhere there were cheers and tears of happiness.  Many of the people in the crowd talked about their feelings of hope and a better future for our country.  It will be remembered as an historic event and we were glad to be a part of it.
